My Dad - Stream of consciences - Happy Father Day - UNEDITED by Melanie Grizzel

father, family, photographer This is my Dad. This is all him. Very unassuming, gentle, outdoorsy, coffee and sweet loving dad.

When I was very small, my fondest and most clear memories of my Dad was us going to Coast to Coast on Saturday mornings. Just looking through all of the fun stuff trying to figure out what our next big project would be. We went every Saturday, at least that what I remember. We were very close, but I was, deep down, a momma's girl.

When I was 9 my parents separated. My mom sent us to a friend house and packed our things and left in the middle of the day. I didn't get to say goodbye, but I was 9 and for some reason wasn't that effected with her decision. I didn't get to see my Dad for several months while they made their arrangements. I remember the next time I saw him. We moved from our home with him to Chicago for under a year, then to Texas. We lived in an apartment complex, and I don't remember how my mom let us know he was coming but she did and I saw him as he rounded the corner under harsh night time lights. I realized then how much I missed him, but the time away had taken it's toll. We didn't really know each other anymore. He got a job in the area and bought a house, took us on the weekends and did his best to be the ideal "see you on the weekend dad." But it was never the same as out Coast to Coast days.

We got a little older, I am in my teens now and Dad is Sooo uncool, and dare I say embarrassing. So our distance grew wider, in retrospect I realize he was trying very hard. He offered all kinds of things including an outing to see Haleys Comet. "Once every 86 years, this is your only shot." No thank you thought, I'm sure I had some extremely important teenagery things to do.

I wish I had gone, I wish I had done a lot of things.

One of the things my Dad has done for as long as I can remember is he will set up all of his music gear the night before my birthday and call and sing "You says it's your birthday!" I can't remember when it started but I remember being turned off by it when I was a teenager. I think as a teenager your turned off by everything. When I moved to New York I moved all over the place and he was always able to keep track of me, for my birthday call. I was only 22 and my teenager still hadn't completely warn off by then. Then one year I remembered the day before it was coming and wondered, "would he call?" Why, yes is the answer, on my cell VM, my work VM and over my home answering machine. After that I made sure to have the phone near by when I went to sleep, is he was going to drag out of bed at 6am to give me my birthday song, then I was going to wake up for it. I still sleep with the phone near by the day before my birthday.

This year marked our second annual Grizzel, Howard, Parks, Howe weekend in Tin Top, where all of these shots were taken. Even as late as last year I was still in my "Dad's a dork phase." This year I suggested a game of badminton and while we were playing, I found myself grooving to a non-existent song. Then I looked across the net to find my Dad dancing to the same song. It was in that moment I realized just how much we're alike. Later that day my sister's family, the Parks were close enough to meet them up the road and we went for a walk up the country road to meet them and it was one of our favorite parts of the whole trip. The Howes and my Dad walking and pulling B in the wagon, we had a great chat and fun horse petting adventures. It was simple, and so memorable.

He's found his gentle nurturing side, he never got it much at home as a kid, so it took him some time to develop that skill. He's got it now, and in full force. He's a great father and grand-father, or Papi as he likes to be called.  I thank Martha and Dad for this short trip in the summer , a chance for all of us to get to know each other without the burdens of computers and cell phones. I got my Dad back.

This is just a teensy bit late, but I love all of the color and decor so much I just have to share it anyway. Cinco De Mayo inspiration - file it away for next year ;) Camille Styles together with her team Chanel and Jen pulled together this mid-afternoon happy hour soiree to celebrate May 5. Sangria, shredded chicken and guacamole tostadas, and delicious watermelon and feta bites, staples really, were all served along side a succulent center piece and lacy table topper. The afternoon progressed to a custom photobooth with hand made Spanish flags. It's a great day to spend with friends!

The Honest Co / Jessica Alba Baby Shower / Austin Event Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Together, The Honest Co. with Jessica Alba and The Simplifiers hosted the most adorable Vintage Garden Party-themed baby shower for Austin's deserving mom Chelsee and deserving dad John. The couple were honored by the Honest Co. along with three other couples nationwide who were hand-selected to win a whirlwind soiree for themselves and 18 guests.  Whole Foods Culinary Center was the location for this swanky affair that was very nearly rained out. The food from Whole foods, the blooms from Stems, and the colorful mismatched goblets and china from LOOT Vintage Rental came together flawlessly to make this "Garden Party" come to life!  With a lifetime supply of diapers from the Honest Co. and gobs of other swag, Chelsee will be in need of nothing, except maybe a couple of spare hands ;) If you'd like to read more about Chelsee you can find her story here.

Eli -N- Ben / Chapel Dulcinea and Tuscan Hall wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

I know quite a lot about Eli and Ben now. We have become quite close in our short time together, and I'll miss them when Ben accepts his job and the pair move off to greener pasture. Eli knew from the first few moments she met Ben that he was her blank, he was even dating her girlfriend and she brazenly reported on a fateful trip to the ladies that night that Ben would be her husband some day. Even during the ceremony Eli placed the ring on Ben's finger and made the sound of a locking chain. I've never seen a pain more completely enamored. They are perfect.

They held their ceremony at Chapel Dulcinea, arguably the most beautiful setting in all of Austin, they moved quickly to Tuscan Hall for dinner, cocktails, cake cutting and a little dancing.

Allison + Curtis / South Austin Engagement Session / Austin Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

I thought it seemed only appropriate since we will be photographing Allison and Curtis' wedding on Sunday that I should post their engagement photographs today. These guys were both power players in DC government. How cool! Note: Allison's gorgeous bridals will go up next Tuesday. I can hardly wait to show them off!  Right after the wedding they are headed to the Windy City for Northwestern and graduate school.

They came in to Austin for a quick weekend last fall. We concentrated on South Austin locations and Zilker Park. It was a perfect fall (really winter, but fall feeling) day.  Sunday night Vintage Villas will be bursting at the seems with good times in honor of these two folks. Congratulations to them. I'm so thrilled to be a part of your wedding day.

Lauren -N- Kevin / Chapel Dulcinea and Stonehouse Villa Wedding / Driftwood Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Lauren and Kevin married at Chapel Dulcinea under the most perfect conditions ever, a little windy with beautiful blue skies. Their reception was held at Stonehouse Villa in beautiful Driftwood, Tx. They had some of the most amazing small touches that came together beautifully with Heather from Vintage&Lace at the helm. Lauren designed her bridesmaids dresses and had them custom made. Stems devised and orchestrated a gorgeous display of flowers in pale colors with touches of tea party silver and crystal and also elements of the outside with succulents and tree stumps. Guests noshed on tea sandwiches and scones from The Steeping Room and shared pints of mead and stout from the home brewing operations of both Lauren's and Kevin's Dads, and Michelle's Patisserie delivered my most favorite cake to date, built to Lauren's exact specifications - perfection.
From Lauren:
My Matron of Honor, Valery Hitt designed and sewed my wedding dress, train, sash embellishment, and hair adornments. She put a lot of time and love into everything that she did for my wedding and I really think that it all turned out beautifully. She is a dear dear person and immensely talented.
The bridesmaids dresses were designed by me (after some unfruitful searching for off-the-rack styles). They were patterned and sewn by Austin Bridal and Formal. They turned out beautifully and have already accomplished their goal of being worn beyond the wedding!
Terra Vista Strings met every request that I sent to them. So I got Final Fantasy VII music for my bridal processional and Concerning Hobbits for the wedding recessional. And then they played my Final Fantasy music again!!! It was awesome!
The song that Kevin and I danced to at the wedding was from a show called Pushing Daisies that we watched together when we first started dating. It is super cute and I think it will always remind us of when we first fell in love with each other.
My Maid of Honor Sarah Nelson drove all the way up from Houston almost every weekend for a few months to teach us a dance for it. We think that we ended up doing a passable job of it on the day of the wedding.
The song that I danced to with my father was called Arirang which is a very very very old Korean folk song. It was one of the few Korean songs that my dad remembered my mom singing when they were younger.
I purchased my husband's ring from a jeweler named Johan Rust on Etsy. The center band of the ring is a seamless meteorite. Kevin is studying Astro-Engineering at UT and has always loved Outer Space so I had an engraving put on the inside of the ring that reads: Sic Itur Ad Astra 3113 It means "Thus you shall go to the stars." And the "3113" is the date of our wedding. I'm giving him a leg-up for anniversaries :)
The necklace that my husband gave to me on the day of the wedding has special significance to me. I was enamored with it at the jewelry shop and wanted very much to wear it on the day of my wedding. Kevin went behind my back and purchased it shortly afterwards. He gave it to my bridesmaid Elizabeth Boyd for safekeeping. And then he got everybody to lie to me for over half a year (including the wonderful shop owners at Franzetti's) about the disappearance of the necklace and prospective availability of another one.So I am very glad that everyone lied to me :p as it increased my delight on the day of my wedding. The large gem in the center of the star is a sapphire which was my only something blue on the day of the wedding. It will forever be a symbol of my husband's love and of the wondrous love and goodness of the people around me who aided him in giving me such a beautiful surprise.
My wedding ring was designed and made by McCoy Jewelcraft. Kevin's mother was a friend and client of theirs and they remembered her when Kevin and I came to have my ring made. They were very kind and helpful to us. They suggested that we bring in gold from broken or unused jewelry to help with the price of the ring. So my ring has gold from Kevin's class ring, my mom's old jewelry, gold and diamonds from my dad's second wedding ring (he and my  mom remarried each other), and gold most generously given from my lovely friend Elizabeth. The ring guard was the ring guard from my mom's first wedding ring. It was fixed and resized by McCoy's.  When we ordered my ring and turned in the gold for it, I told McCoy's that I trusted them to make a beautiful ring and left happily with no idea of what it was going to look like. When Kevin proposed to me that Christmas, he presented me with a ring beyond my imagination. It is beautiful and unlike any other.
The dollhouse was a project that Kevin and I started for the wedding. I thought that a dollhouse would be appropriate since we were asking for house money to put in savings in lieu of other gifts. We bought a $30 kit from Hobby Lobby and thought that it would be easy. I helped to paint the house and then Kevin did pretty much everything else and the project took on a life of its own. His original degree is in theater set design so I suppose it makes sense. He built a plot of land for it to sit on and put together all of the small details that made it charming. It was project that I thought would not last beyond a couple of weeks and it turned into a several month long adventure in arts and crafts.
It was a labor of love.

Keeli -N- Kevin / Zilker Park and Auditorium Shores Engagement Session / Austin Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

As a photographer in Austin, I shoot a lot of the same locations.  Our clients see work of their friends and family online and already have a good idea of where they want to shoot. It's my job to perceive it differently each time, give each client something new; it makes their images better when I'm challenged and inspired. Some elements can make a difference.  Sunlight, time of day, time of year and other weather factors all come together to make it into each couple's engagement photos. Keeli -N- Kevin chose Auditorium shores and Zilker Park for their engagement session, and in their case, the wind really added to the entire experience.  It was no picnic for Keeli's long beautiful hair, but she eased into her session little bit by little bit.  After a brief moment of trying to fix her hair each time it blew, we got some really terrific candid and windy hair moments which I think adds character and charm to their images. I love shots like that, the ones where concern and nervousness has slipped away and what's left is the love they share. The moments they enjoy and the experience they have with each other and with me.

I'm excited for their wedding in July: Riviera Maya, Mexico. A beautful wedding with their nearest and dearest on Sunday night and a romantic after session at sunset on Monday. We'll be having some fun.

Cari -N- Mike / North Austin and 360 Bridge Engagement Session / Austin Engagement Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Cari and Mike we're open to any ideas, but they really wanted to go to the 360 bridge too, cause they live near there. I chose this wonderful tunnel I have seen many times near my home in NE Austin. It's been a bit of a fantasy really, I have a fascination with Urban settings and this place fits me like a glove. I have a little notebook of ideas that I love to use when couples are open to trying something completely different. My favorite ;)

I have been to this tunnel a couple of times, I have shot B there so I know it has great light and depth.  We had a great time bringing it to life in these photographs, Cari and Mike are innovators. Cari in her screaming red sweater really brought something extra special to this grey urban set-up. Then we headed over to 360 bridge. I have seen it photographed many times of course, but I have never seen it in person - up close. As an artist and a photographer, I am supposed to see it differently, so we opted for a park bench under the bridge, it was so beautiful from that angle.  We also photographed on private property just to the west of 360: tall trees and no obstructions. It was a misty, cloudy morning and it was perfect.

Shameem + Ammar / Barton Creek Resort Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Muslim-Americans have a challenging time finding spouses. It's never called "dating" when two people are getting to know each other; usually "talking." People meet through dating sites, introductions through friends, family, or other networks, and a few meet spontaneously on their own.

Ammar and I were introduced by my sister and brother-in-law, and talked to each other for about a year until the conversation turned to wedding planning. We were a long-distance couple from the start, and remain that way even now after we've said our vows and cut our cake. We met on a blind double-date March 2011, and on Cinco de Mayo 2012, the same evening as the Supermoon, Ammar proposed on top of the 360 bridge in Austin.

Our families are of different cultures, and it was important to us to respect both and also have a wedding that was uniquely our own. We visited 3 places one super hot day in July 2012; the Barton Creek Resort and Spa was the last place we saw that day and the minute we looked around we said "yep, this is it." We loved planning our wedding, and picked our florist, videographer, save the dates, and menu together without any meltdowns, and had some pretty fun experiences with the people we ended up not picking. Strangely we did not even meet Melanie until the week of the wedding.

We did not register for presents since we didn't want to store a bunch of household items when we weren't even going to live together for another year or two, and instead registered through the "I Do" Foundation for donations to be made to a couple good causes near and dear to us both, the Human Development Foundation and Women for Afghan Women. Our guests raised a little more than $2000 for the two charities combined.

A friend told me that planning a wedding together would be a glimpse for us of what it would be like to be married. I am so glad that for us it was not only fun, but I found that we consistently took the time to be considerate and kind to each other, and really try to make sure the other person was happy throughout the process. We even had two sets of wedding invitations printed because we couldn't quite agree on the same color - and at the end of the day, that is fine! (Although, the bedroom furniture will have to be 1 color, Ammar!) :)

We had so much fun at the wedding, and we are so blessed to have had so many of our friends and family travel from all over, one cousin even from Australia, to celebrate with us. When we sat looking out at our family and friends in this beautifully decorated venue on the evening of the wedding, it was really cool and special knowing that it was a product of both of our efforts, combining both our tastes and vision for the evening.  As far as microcosms go, I think this was a great preview of what is ahead. :)

Kelly -N- Stephen / Green Pastures Wedding / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

Our wedding was in the planning stages for quite awhile - we were engaged for over two years (since 9/18/10) before our big day.  I really wanted the event to reflect a combination of our personalities - casual, laid back, and natural - but still special.  I knew Green Pastures was the perfect location because it felt like coming to someone's home rather than a stark event center.  It felt warm and cozy, despite still being able to accommodate our 130 guests.

The colors (teal and yellow) actually were inspired by the colors of my shoes.  I was shopping just a month or two after our engagement, and I fell in love with these polka-dot Seychelles shoes.  At the time, I wasn't looking for wedding shoes, but these were perfect.  I used them to help pick out the bridesmaids dress color and the yellow ties for the guys.
Going with the "natural" look, Bouquets of Austin did our floral arrangements and did an absolutely perfect job.  I wanted lots of color, and a "gathered" look.  I pretty much gave them a blank slate and they didn't disappoint!  It was wonderful to walk into the room at Green Pastures and be greeted by the smell and sight of our beautiful bouquets!  A few of my other favorite details: my garter, knitted by one of my bridesmaids, Trisha; the cake-topper of two teal lovebirds, custom ordered from Orly Design on Etsy; and the guys' Texas cuff links, ordered online from who-knows-where by Stephen.
Of course, it threatened rain all day on Saturday, and ended up pouring right during the window of time our ceremony was supposed to be outside.  Stephen and I both love the outdoors, and it was a bit of a bummer to not get to have the ceremony under the beautiful live oak trees at Green Pastures.  But, I do have to say that the indoor ceremony was intimate and beautiful, and was everything we wanted.  We didn't know what our officiant was going to say, and his speech was perfect.  Again, the folks at Bouquets of Austin really did a wonderful job accommodating the last-minute rain changes!  And the fact that it rained made our after-ceremony photo session even more intimate because all the guests were still inside.  I thought it was so great that we randomly found that UT umbrella to use in the pictures - perfect touch!
And of course, there was plenty of dancing!  That might have been the most important thing to me: there had to be dancing!  Heck we even did Gangnam Style. If anything it just went by way too quickly.
Finally, we got to make our get-away in an awesome teal Cadillac from Vintage Rides of Austin.  Even though our hotel was only about 5 minutes down the road, the driver (who happened to also be the owner, Ed) took us for a spin through downtown.  It was really a magical way to end our night!  We got to have a little time to just bask in all that had just happened.  People waved to us and shouted congratulations as we cruised down the streets.  It was a perfect ending to a perfect night!  Our only regret: hopping on a plane the next morning at 10am to head back to North Carolina.  A leisurely after-wedding brunch might have been nice :-)

Emily -N- Blake / Inn at Wild Rose Hall / Austin Wedding Photographer by Melanie Grizzel

So we decided on the beautiful and rustic hill country venue of The Inn at Wild Rose Hall. I wore a short dress. The groomsmen wore jeans, the bridesmaids wore mix match navy dresses. And there were
Cowboy Boots! Lots of them. Both bride and groom wore Lucchese ;) I always loved the vintage feel of a birdcage veil, so I picked that, and rocked it, I must say.We served Matt's El Rancho, one of our favorite Austin Tex Mex joints. We served amazing cupcakes by the ever so talented Megan DuBois of Queen of the Frontier, she also created the rustic and beautiful display, mostly a collection of family dishes.
Did I mention I collect Coca Cola antiques? Because let me tell you my favorite part of our wedding. Well, other than marrying my knight. I had my florist Zinnia and Co. fill old wooden antique Coca Cola crates with beautiful baby's breath, billy balls, and candles. It was exactly how I pictured it in my head. Rustic, vintage, simple, casual, welcoming, warm, and unique.
We danced the night away and our wedding party did not dissapoint. We closed the place down with a 20 minute encore of Michael Jackson classics. Everything was perfectly and seamlessly stages and executed by Leah Robertson from Austin Elite.
I think one of my favorite moments was walking towards Blake, my arm wrapped up in my father's. This was it. It was finally here. And amongst all this planning and details, it came down to one thing. He was handsome, he was strong, he looked not-nervous. He looked happy. He looked ready. I am so proud of the man he has become and I can't wait for the years ahead of us

Arranged / Austin wedding Flowers / Austin Wedding Photography by Melanie Grizzel

Arranged is a newish florist in town. Rachel specializes in low and compact arrangements. She wanted to put together a cohesive collection of images for her modern foral website. We spent an afternoon together in December making arrangements, listening to Christmas music and photographing flowers. It was a delightful day. I can't wait  until next time.
